Tuesday Talk | Tips for Helping Kids Sleep When Traveling

Wednesday, July 8, 2015

Summer is definitely a big season for traveling. And with traveling comes new sleeping arrangements for the kids. This summer we traveled to two places where the kids had to adjust to new sleeping arrangements. When we went to the beach the four of us were all I one room, and we somehow all managed to sleep fairly well that week.

Here are a few tips to help you out if you're kids are going to be sleeping in new environments this summer.

ONE | ROUTINE
If your child doesn't have a routine, I'd probably start now. Establishing a good daily routine is always good for kids. And sticking to it, even while on vacation, is always key. While at the beach we kept both kids on their nap and bedtime schedules and they did great!

TWO | CREATE A SPACE JUST FOR THEM
This is definitely most important, I think. Just like when you're at home, kids need to know where their space for sleeping is and that they can access it when they're tired. I always make it a point to show Wyatt exactly where he'll be sleeping and say, "this is your bed". I also make sure and put his blanket and "Lion" there too.

THREE | DON'T FORGET TO PACK THEIR SLEEPING AIDES
Wyatt has two things he sleeps with every night, his blanket and "Lion". If we don't have both of them, then no one's sleeping. The hard part is making sure they're not left behind when you come home. Stella sleeps with a sound machine, so I make sure to have an app on my phone that we can use when she sleeps.

I hope these little tricks will help you get some shut eye while traveling with your little ones this summer!
