Friends are the Most Important Ingredient in This Recipe of Life

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

We had a an amazing weekend with some wonderful friends of ours!
You'd think since we live two streets away from one another we'd spend a heck of a lot more time together.
But with our crazy, busy, hectic lives it's hard to find the time.

Friday Candi and Ryan found out they are having another little boy in January...we're so excited for them!
So of course as soon as I got off work I ran and picked up some "boy" goodies.  I'm such a loser and forgot to take pictures, they were so cute!  I bought a little frame that has a great description of boys and a Razorback onesie.  The onesie is really neat!  It has a place where you can write his date of birth, weight, length, and some other fun details about the day he is born.  So we took their gifts over to them and then we all headed to Cardinal Cafe for dinner. YUM!

Saturday was the Lockheed Martin steak cook-off.  But of course it started around 11:00 and it was so flippin' hot! We hung out, ate some appetizers, let the kids play, and then headed back to Ryan and Candi's for burgers!  Probably not as good as the steak we could have had, but there was a/c!
At the cook-off they had some fun kid activities and one was a dunking booth.  The supervisors rotate sitting in the booth.  Of course while we were there Sean and Ryan's supervisor was in it so they had to take a shot ...or two!
Colin had to get in on the action too!

Yes, that's a mug full of beer!  And no, he was not left unsupervised with Ellie.  :)

Sunday we headed to church and then afterwards we went to Wood's Place to eat lunch, with of course...Ryan  & Candi!  They probably felt claustrophobic from all the space we were taking up in their lives over the weekend!  But heck we probably won't see'em again for another week and a half. . . at least!

Girls Night

Saturday, August 20, 2011

Wednesdays have now become "Girls Night Out" with two of my girlfriends here in Camden. So this past week we had the opportunity to go eat and to a movie. We ate at Larry's Pizza, mmmmmm!! And we went and saw The Help. I was so excited to see the movie, especially since I read the book over the summer. Surprisingly the movie followed the book really well and didn't leave out too many key details.

I'm definitely enjoying these nights out with Candi and Rachel! It's been a great stress relief, especially with the start of school this week!

Project 2: Pillow (First Attempt)

Friday, August 19, 2011

I have been trying really hard to be more crafty.  I've never been in to arts and crafts.  I tried to do scrap booking and gave that up and started Shutterflying. . .so much easier (and less work).  Well, I was pretty successful on the memory board I made.  So now with all my confidence from that I have a  far fetched goal.  I would like to know how to sew before we have children.  I would love to be able to sew them cute outfits, tutus, bows, etc. The problem is, I've never sewed in my life!  Well, unless you count the sewing class I took in HS where I was forced to sew for a grade.
Anyways, here is my first attempt at trying to sew. . . a pillow.

First I cut out two 18x18 squares.

Then, I pinned them together on three sides.
You're probably asking, "Why didn't she sew in a zipper on the fourth side?"
Well, because I didn't have one and I had no idea how.
So once I got the three sides sewn together I flipped it right side out, stuffed it, and sewed it shut!

Voila'! A little lumpy, I know.

Moral of the story...I went to WM and bought a zipper!
P.S. The side I sewed shut is on the bottom.
P.P.S I know the color looks orange, but it's actually red.

One Day - Movie

In the Spring I read a book called One Day. I knew it was going to be a movie but wasn't quite sure when it would be out.  I'm so excited because it's coming out on FRIDAY!

Out and About

Monday, August 15, 2011

Saturday night we grabbed some dinner and then went driving around (to let our tummies settle from eating way too much pizza).  While we were out on our drive we saw a ton lot of deer!
Almost every house we passed had deer out front.

If you look closely you can see one, of the two, fawns standing between the trees.
This one's better.  There are the two fawns.
They look bigger in the picture than they actually were.
They still have their spots...so cute!

The Help

Sunday, August 14, 2011

This summer I read The Help and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It's one of those books that just sucks you right in!  The book has several story lines going throughout.  The main story is about three women (two African American maids and one Caucasian) who have set out to right the truth about the racial inequalities in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s.
I'm really excited because this book is also now a movie.  I am looking forward to seeing it!

Back to School

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

On Monday we had our Open House at school.  I know, it's kind of odd that we do it before school starts.  But, it's a great way to meet the students and talk to them a little bit before they're dropped off on the first day of school.  It's also a good time for parents to come and fill out ALL that paperwork!  Every year for Open House mom sends me a little something to get my year started off in a positive way.  The past two years she has sent plants for my classroom, which I and the students greatly enjoy! But this year I got something just for me! She sent me a new. . .

LUNCH BOX!!

And this is me before Open House started.
(Not my classroom.)

Project 1: Memory Board

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Recently I made a memory board for my classroom.  It was so simple, I think it took maybe 30 minutes to make (besides having to wait on the plywood to be cut).

Materials:

  • Piece of plywood (24x18)
  • Fabric
  • Cotton batting
  • Ribbon
  • Staple gun
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

1.  Center the batting on the back of the fabric.

2.  Center the plywood on the back of the batting.

3.  Start on one side and pull the material tightly around to the back. Staple.  (Leave the corners alone until all 4 sides are stapled.)

4.  Continue on the one side and then do the same on the opposite side.
5.  Once you've stapled the material in place on all 4 sides, fold the corners in and staple them in to place.

6. Flip it over and now you can do the ribbon.  Start with the first piece going from corner to opposite corner. Pull tightly and staple onto the back.

7.  Measure approx. 5" to the right/left and place the next ribbon.  Staple it in place on the back.  Continue this until you have gone across the board in one direction.
8.  When placing the ribbons the opposite way, again, start at one corner and go to the opposite corner.  BUT, you're going to go over and under the ribbons that are already stapled in place.
9.  Again, measure approx. 5" to the left/right and continue stapling the ribbons into place.  Remember though, go over/under the ribbons that run the opposite direction.
10.  Voila'! You have made you're own memory board!

My Bucket List

Friday, August 5, 2011

I was talking to Sean the other day and I mentioned wanting to go to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade someday.  It got me thinking about all of the things I would eventually like to do and I realized, I don't have a "bucket list".  So, in no particular order, here is my 'bucket list'.  I do realize I will have to update it periodically because obviously I won't be able to think of everything in one night.

  1. Attend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade
  2. Go to Paris (France. . .not Arkansas)
  3. Swim with dolphins
  4. Go whale watching
  5. Deep sea fishing
  6. Snow skiing
  7. Write down mine and Sean's love story
  8. Go to NYC
  9. Go on an actual African safari
  10. Take a road trip along Hwy 1 in California
  11. Go on an Alaskan cruise
  12. Buy a real Louis Vuitton purse from an actual Louis Vuitton store
  13. Watch every episode of 'Friends'
  14. Design and build my own house
  15. Disney World. . .with my kids
  16. Have at least 2 kids
  17. Buy a sports car
  18. Open my own business
  19. Hire someone to clean my home...at least one time
  20. Attend an Arkansas vs LSU football game

I had to put a couple of things I could mark off.  What's a list without being able to check things off?

I'll have to add some more later. . .it's taken me too long to come up with this small list.
